What is CBD?

What is CBD

CBD stands for Cannabidiol, and it is a natural compound found in the hemp plant.  Unlike THC, CBD is non-intoxicating. It will not get you high. CBD belongs to a group of compounds called cannabinoids that are produced by the hemp plant.  These compounds interact with the human body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) and bind to a system of receptors in the brain. CBD has a wide range of potential therapeutic benefits.

The Endocannabinoid system

The Endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signaling system identified in the early 1990s by researchers exploring cannabis benefits.  Cannabinoids are compounds found in cannabis.  The ECS plays a role in regulating bodily functions and processes like sleep, mood, appetite, pain, motor control, and inflammation.  This system exists in your body even if you don’t use cannabis.  There are endocannabinoid receptors found throughout the body, and CBD can bind to these receptors.  Enzymes are also a component of the ECS, and they are responsible for creating and destroying cannabinoids.  Your body also contains endocannabinoids that are naturally produced.

Endocannabinoids and CBD can interact with cannabinoid receptor sites and help with stress, depression, anxiety, inflammation, and pain.

There Are Three Types of CBD Products

Full Spectrum CBD (up to 0.3% THC)

Full spectrum CBD contains everything the hemp plant contains.  It is full of all the terpenes, cannabinoids, flavonoids, and fatty acids found in hemp, all of which have therapeutic value of their own and help create was is known as the entourage effect.  The entourage effect refers to the beneficial effect you get from ingesting approximately 500 compounds (flavonoids, cannabinoids, and fatty acids) found in the hemp plant.

Flavonoids are phytonutrients which are responsible for the vivid non-green colors we see in plants.  The color of red apples and blueberries is due to their unique flavonoid profile.  Flavonoids are known to have antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Terpenes are responsible for the smell of a tangerine or the sharpness of pine needles. Common terpenes are limonene (found in citrus fruits) and linalool (found in lavender). Terpenes have therapeutic effects on the human body.

Broad Spectrum CBD (0% THC)

Broad spectrum CBD is full spectrum THC with no THC.  It offers all the entourage effects associated with full spectrum CBD without the possibility of THC being ingested into the body.  Broad spectrum CBD is a great choice for individuals who cannot have THC in their system due to employment, sports, etc.

Isolate CBD (0% THC)

CBD isolate is 99.9% pure CBD.  During the CBD extraction process, everything contained in the hemp plant is removed, including any traces of THC, terpenes, waxes, oils, chlorophyll and more.  What you’re left with is pure CBD…and nothing else.
